Part Numbering

Part Numbering

Advantages for Non-Intelligent Part Numbering:

  • Saves Time – Easy to pull sequential number for an item
  • Fewer training needed
  • Lesser point of failure
  • Simple maintenance

Disadvantages

  • Difficulty in managing part numbers – need additional metadata to define parts and then use that information
  • Potential for errors – Entering wrong numbers manually

Advantages of Intelligent part numbers

  • Search efficiency
  • Error reduction
  • Process improvements – manufacturing process, routing and review process can be predefined for part number classes or categories

Disadvantages

  • Training and knowledge required – the person assigning the number needs to understand how to place the part in the right group
  • Ongoing maintenance – if the new part doesn’t fit the current scheme, the existing scheme would need an evaluation for a new definition of part type
  • Process Inefficiencies – single person of group pulling the part number becomes a bottleneck and pulling a part number may require time and discussion and slows down the process

Part Classification:

Hummingbird’s parts classification & standardization process helps improve operational readiness and reduce lifecycle costs by effectively using common, available, cost effective, and reliable parts.

Our customers have realized the following benefits:

  • Cost reduction in maintaining suppliers
  • Cost reduction in maintaining parts
  • Reduction in duplicate part designs
  • Improve in overall product quality
  • Improve warranty costs by re-using of know “good” parts
  • Improve search ability of parts
  • Reduction in new product re-designs by avoiding obsolete, long-lead time and non-compliant parts.
  • Having a standard parts library helps in improving quality and cost effectiveness of overall part-reuse
